Before: Unresolved Grief, Daily Drinking, and the Wake-Up Call

For three years, life had been caught in a downward spiral defined by persistent emotional weight and self-medication. The emotional turning point came with the loss of a parent, triggering a rapid descent into daily alcohol dependence that proved impossible to manage alone:

“I’ve had my struggles, especially in the last three years—certain things like anxiety, depression. After losing my father, I got into the alcohol pretty deep. And with a daughter, that’s not something that I wanted to be doing, living day in, day out. And I knew it was a time for change, not just for me, but for my daughter as well and my whole family.”

The cycle of drinking was sustained by relentless psychological and physical urges that never provided a break. For three unbroken years, not a day passed without the gnawing obsession to drink.

While alternative treatments had been on the radar for an extended period, hesitation kept things on hold until the compounding toll on family life made immediate action unavoidable:

“I’ve been looking into [ibogaine] for quite some time, and it just wasn’t the right time when I went to pull the trigger. Now was the right time. So, I booked it, and within a week I was here.”

During: Surrender, Two Treatments, and Comprehensive Holistic Care

Entering the facility, any initial anxiety around the clinical environment was immediately tempered by a supportive, open, and non-punitive setting:

“It’s unlike any other treatment facility. It’s not like you’re going into a hospital where things get taken away from you and you’re secluded by yourself—it’s not like that at all. It’s very mindful… The staff is incredible. From the chef to the facilitators to even the cleaning ladies and the doctors. I’ve felt safe during the treatment, between the treatments, even going out and getting to go to the cenote, everything. Not once did I feel I was in danger.”

The clinical journey was structured across two primary treatments. Approaching the first session required letting go of rigid expectations and trusting the somatic process:

“The medicine itself is incredible. It’s life-changing. I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially with the first treatment. You just kind of have to give in to let the medicine do its work, not put too much pressure onto yourself of how it’s supposed to be, and go with the flow. And it actually was way different and better than I thought it would be.”

While the initial dose halted the underlying physical pull, the follow-up administration solidified the internal reset: “After the first treatment, I felt quite a bit different. And then the second treatment was exponentially different. And I feel fantastic now.”

Crucial to the recovery process was the comprehensive integrative care that supported the brain between treatments:

“Between the medicine itself and all the mindfulness activities—the massage, the sound healing, the acupuncture, the talk therapy—all the things that come along with it really help. It’s enlightening and it just gives you that push forward. And the journaling, too, gives your mind a space to release and kind of write down what you feel and reflect on that.”

After: Rewired Thought Patterns and Eight Days to a Clear Horizon

Stepping away from the acute phase of treatment, the results were both immediate and profound. The chronic, daily compulsion toward alcohol that had dominated the previous three years was gone:

“I haven’t craved alcohol once since my first treatment. I haven’t even thought about it. And that’s not something that’s happened in the last 3 years. So that’s pretty huge for me.”

Beyond physical cessation, the emotional climate shifted entirely. The deep-rooted depressive patterns and anxiety gave way to emotional clarity and genuine presence:

“It’s been 8 days and I feel like a totally different person… I absolutely feel a big shift, a big difference in my thought patterns.”

Leaving the facility to return home to their daughter, the focus shifted from fighting day-to-day urges to continuing intentional integration work with a clean, fully reset nervous system:

“Once you experience the first treatment, you understand what you’re here for and you understand the benefits that can come from it and what’s on the other side of it. Of course, there’s work to be done after leaving here, but that’s part of the process. But this is a huge stepping stone into that life of sobriety and life of enlightenment.”
