Before: The Prescription Trap and the Heavy Fog

For years, recovery had been something I actually had a handle on. I had gone through traditional rehab a long time ago and managed to build up solid, continuous clean time. But life threw a curveball four months ago when a physical injury sent me to the doctor, and everything started slipping backward.

“I had an injury a few months ago, 4 months ago, and they put me on pain pills and then I had had prior problems with pain pills in the past years ago. It just kind of brought up old stuff and got down in a funk and just haven’t felt healthy—and haven’t been able to bring myself out of the funk.”

It wasn’t just the physical dependency creeping back; underneath it was a persistent layer of depression that traditional methods never seemed to fully resolve. Facing the prospect of detox, the standard medical route felt like a dead end. I didn’t want to swap one dependency for a lifetime of maintenance drugs.

“I managed to do good for a while, you know, but it’s I guess it’s just depression and that is what brought me back here to try something different. I didn’t want to get put on medications. I wanted to try something more natural and just heal my body and not be on a whole bunch of prescriptions whenever I leave.”

Taking that leap wasn’t easy. The fear of the unknown, traveling to an unfamiliar setting, and confronting my own history head-on felt overwhelming: “I was scared when I came here, but I did it.”

During: The Physical Cleanse and Waking Back Up

The treatment unfolded across two separate sessions, meeting my body exactly where it was. The first session took on the physical burden of clearing the slate, while the second brought the emotional and mental relief.

“Everything felt really good. The first one I felt it more, you know, when it was cleaning my body out… I could feel it physically a lot more the first time than the second. The second time was a lot better and that’s whenever I started to really see a difference and started to feel better.”

Following the medicine sessions, the recovery extended into the surrounding environment and culture. Visiting a local cenote and immersing myself in the cold natural water served as an immediate somatic reset, snapping my nervous system out of months of stagnant exhaustion.

“We went to the cenote. I enjoyed that a lot. I guess the cold water I felt like it just made me start feeling better. Brought my body back. Woke my body up. That’s what it felt like. It just kind of… woke my body up after just being down, you know, and being sick, not feeling good.”

After: Clear-Headed, Happy, and Ready to Go Home

Walking out of the experience, the heavy physical pull of the painkillers and the dark cloud of depression had simply evaporated:

“Uh, they went away. Yeah, they went away. Feel happy again.”

Instead of leaving weighed down by an armful of prescriptions, my baseline was completely reset. The mental fog cleared out, replaced by a simple, grounded focus on real life and family.

“Well, I’m just I’m ready to get back to living a normal life, get back to my family. No alcohol, nothing.”

Looking back, the weeks spent hesitating and agonizing over whether to take the risk felt completely unnecessary. For anyone sitting where I was—stuck in a cycle and terrified of taking the first step—the message is clear:

“I would tell them not to be scared. It wasn’t anything like I thought it was going to be. It was a totally different experience. I think it’s different for everybody… I watched a lot of videos before I came and listened to other people’s experiences and my own experience was a lot different than other people’s. So, and I feel a lot better today than I did when I got here. Just be willing to try it, you know? Be willing to take the risk to help yourself.”
